26th Place for Alex

What looked like a possibly very exciting weekend for Alex and fans never materialized as he followed his two opening 68’s with a 75 on Saturday, effectively ending his chance at victory.  After spending the first two days in the top 10 and only four strokes off the lead, he couldn’t keep the momentum going and finished Saturday in 36th.

He did not play particularly bad, just didn’t make very many putts.  He had opportunities but couldn’t get anything to fall.  His round Friday was similar, missing three pretty good chances at birdie and a par saver.  It turns out that a 67 would have propelled Alex into the top 10.  A few putts drop and he was right there.  Nonetheless, Alex’s even par 70 was good enough to move him up 10 spots on Sunday.

The difference on the weekend was putting.  After needing only 54 putts during the first two rounds, Alex had 67 over the weekend.  His ball-striking stats were actually better on the weekend.  However, his first two rounds featured many clutch up-and-downs to save par.  Hopefully he can soon put four good rounds together.

Alex took a red-eye to Puerto Rico last night and will be playing in the Puerto Rico Open presented by Banco Popular.  The event will be played on the Trump International Golf Club.  Let’s hope Alex puts it all together for a good result.  Many of the top players will be playing in the WCG so there is a great opportunity for Alex to secure a top finish.
